Bankruptcy and Rental Applications
Bankruptcy will appear on your credit report for 7-10 years, and most landlords run credit checks. However, Section 525(a) prohibits government housing agencies from discriminating based on bankruptcy.
- Private landlords: Section 525 does NOT cover private landlord rental decisions. Private landlords can legally consider bankruptcy when evaluating applications.
- Public/subsidized housing: Government-administered housing programs cannot deny you solely because of bankruptcy.
- Practical tips: See our Apartment After Bankruptcy guide for strategies to get approved.
