Section 01All 94 Federal Bankruptcy Districts
The United States bankruptcy system comprises 94 federal bankruptcy districts, mirroring the boundaries of the 94 federal judicial districts. Each district operates from one or more physical courthouses where bankruptcy proceedings under Title 11 of the United States Code are held. This directory catalogs 217 courthouse location(s) across all 94 districts.
Section 02How Venue Is Determined
Federal bankruptcy venue is governed by 28 U.S.C. § 1408. A case may be filed in the district where the debtor has its domicile, residence, principal place of business, or principal assets for the 180 days preceding the filing, or for a longer portion of those 180 days than in any other district. Within a district, division assignment is generally by debtor residence county or entity principal-place-of-business county, with division-specific local rules controlling.
Cases may be transferred between districts under 28 U.S.C. § 1412 for the convenience of the parties or in the interest of justice. Transfer between divisions of the same district is governed by local rule.
Section 03Free Access to Bankruptcy Case Records
Federal bankruptcy court records from every US bankruptcy district are available free of charge in the RECAP Archive of the Free Law Project. RECAP mirrors PACER documents at no cost to readers. The Open Bankruptcy Project maintains paginated case indexes for each district at /cases/.
